What VGA Played This Month - July 2020

Here in this regular feature, we’ll let you know what games we’re playing, why we’re playing them, and what goes through our minds (or doesn’t) when we do. Got a suggestion for something we should be playing? Hit us up at info@vgagallery.org.

Aside from XCOM 2, I’ve been playing the hell out of Phobia Game Studio’s Carrion. If you’ve ever wanted to cosplay as the parasitic, amorphous extraterrestrial life-form from John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982), this game’s for you! You play as an ever-growing mass of mouths, meat, and cartilage attempting to escape a shady underground biotech facility, smashing and grabbing and smooshing your way through its anthill-like levels. I’m especially into the Wilhelm Scream-laden sound design. RIP Wilford Brimley!

This feels like a weird moment to be getting really into Assassin’s Creed and its lore, but after my muscly deep dive into Odyssey last month, lately Syndicate has made itself part of my identity. Steampunk isn’t really my thing, but if you ignore all the belts and gears the whole game looks like a goddamn Merchant & Ivory movie. Freeing workhouse orphans and helping Karl Marx stick it to Queen Victoria’s goons is honestly my only solace right now. Let me have this.

Jedi: Fallen Order - Surprisingly, ordered.

This month I played Ruya, a relaxing and adorable puzzle game. Totally could be a mobile game but its on PC. Puzzles were indeed relaxing, which ended up with me finishing the game within two sittings. Graphics and music were relaxing which made for a chill afternoon during quarantine.

I decided to use the benefit of spending more time to play video games to revisit some titles I liked, but would lose track of narratively/mechanically back when my regular routine was to play only a few hours a day. So between my regular sailing with friends in Sea Of Thieves, I took up playing through both of the Dishonored games, which really thrive in terms of user agency and adapting to personal playstyle, as long as you can remember what button does what.

Bonus! This month’s Question Zone subject Derrick Fields:

Tenchu: Fatal Shadows and Ghost of Tsushima! At this point, I am sure you can see a thorough like of Japanese games here ha. I really enjoy playing old games as well so revisiting Tenchu on Playstation 2 has been a blast (hard as heck, however)!
